Why learn music and take music lessons?

“Why learn music?” and “why take private music lessons?” are two of the most common questions we get asked at BluesTone Music Studio – and no wonder. With so many different extracurricular activities available to the average kid (and adult), it’s normal to question which options you should choose to commit to. Below, we outline the benefits of learning music and taking private lessons, so you can compare for yourself how guitar lessons stack up against your other extracurricular options.

Why music?

Numerous studies have shown that learning music assists with cognitive, emotional, intellectual, physical, and even social development.

Just like playing sport, learning an instrument helps to develop physical coordination and fine motor skills. That’s because music students must translate visual cues (the notes or “tab” on the page in front of them) into physical actions.

Music is a language filled with subtle and overt patterns. So, it’s no surprise that many kids who play an instrument exhibit better language development and pattern recognition compared to their non-music studying peers.

Music students of all ages also tend to demonstrate improvements in memory and decreases in stress and anxiety compared to when they didn’t play an instrument. These benefits can then extend to other areas of life, including home, school, and work.

In almost every aspect of life, mastery leads to confidence. Learning music is no exception. As students master songs, scales, music reading, and other tasks associated with playing their chosen instrument, their confidence gets a boost. This increased confidence then snowballs into other benefits, including improved social and interpersonal skills.

So, as you can see, there are plenty of reasons to learn guitar, bass guitar, or ukulele!

Why private lessons?

The greatest benefit of one-on-one music lessons is the individual attention you (or your child) will receive.

In a classroom setting, you don’t get to pursue your personal music interests, learn in a way that’s tailored to suit you, receive instant feedback, or troubleshoot your individual challenges. You also tend to receive less support and encouragement.

In contrast, at BluesTone Music, we tailor all our guitar, bass guitar, and ukulele lessons to suit you (or your child). This individualised approach makes learning music more fun. It also means you can make greater progress and more easily develop an abiding love of music (which is our greatest goal for all our students!).
